Sunny summer beaches, whale season, harvest in the vineyards or quiet green winters? Here's what each season in Cape Town is really like, and which one suits your trip.
The best time to visit Cape Town depends on what you want from your trip. The city has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters, and every season has something special. This guide walks through the year so you can choose the right time for you.
Cape Town at a glance
- Summer (December to February): hot, dry and sunny. Peak season.
- Autumn (March to May): warm, calm and golden. Many locals' favourite.
- Winter (June to August): cool and rainy, green and quiet. Whale season begins.
- Spring (September to November): mild and fresh. Whales and wildflowers.
Summer: December to February
Summer is Cape Town at its most lively. Days are long and sunny, the beaches are busy, and the city is full of outdoor markets, concerts and festivals. It's the best time for swimming, sundowners on the Atlantic Seaboard and hiking Lion's Head at sunset.
There are two things to know. First, it's peak season, so accommodation, popular restaurants and tours should be booked well ahead, especially over Christmas and New Year. Second, summer brings the south-easterly wind, nicknamed the "Cape Doctor". It clears the air but can be strong, and it sometimes closes the Table Mountain cableway.
Best for: beaches, outdoor dining, long days of sightseeing.
Autumn: March to May
Autumn is one of the best-kept secrets of a Cape Town holiday. The summer crowds thin out, the wind usually drops, and the weather often stays warm and settled. In the Winelands, the grape harvest runs from about February into April, and the vineyards turn gold and red later in the season.
Best for: wine tasting, hiking, photography and good value.
Winter: June to August
Winter brings rain, mostly in passing cold fronts, with clear, crisp days in between. The mountains turn green, waterfalls appear on Table Mountain and the city is relaxed. It's the cheapest time to visit, and an excellent season for cosy wine tastings by the fire.
Winter also marks the start of whale season. Southern right whales arrive along the Western Cape coast from around June, and the numbers build towards spring. Read our guide to whale watching in Hermanus for more.
Best for: value, whales, food and wine, fewer crowds. Pack a rain jacket and stay flexible.
Spring: September to November
Spring is a wonderful time to visit. Temperatures rise, the countryside is green, and whale season reaches its peak in September and October. North of Cape Town, the West Coast and Namaqualand burst into wildflowers, usually from August to September, depending on the winter rains. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is also at its colourful best.
Best for: whales, flowers, mild sightseeing weather.
So, when should you go?
- For beaches and sunshine: December to March.
- For the best all-round weather with fewer crowds: March to May, or October and November.
- For whales: June to November, best in September and October.
- For value: June to August.
- For a mix of everything: late October and November, when the weather is warm, the whales are still around and the summer crowds have not yet arrived.
Plan around the weather, not against it
Cape Town's weather can change quickly, and wind affects what's possible on any given day. That's one of the biggest advantages of a private guide: if the cableway is closed, you can switch to the Cape Peninsula or the Winelands and come back to the mountain when it's calm.
